Monthly Review
June
This June, we explored the many layers of language—from structure and sound to history and storytelling. In the English Readings section, advanced learners dove into how our brains adapt through interlanguage, how native sounds shape second-language pronunciation, and why rhythm and intonation matter more than we think. We also looked at the surprising impact of war on the English language and reflected on the ongoing debate between grammar-first and conversation-first learning.
Meanwhile, English Grammar posts provided practical, themed vocabulary in Spanish, covering useful topics like furniture, business & finance, places in the city, and conflict. These were designed with basic to intermediate learners in mind, blending clarity with everyday relevance.
In the Castellano (Español) section, we highlighted what makes Spanish special: the delicate balance of formal vs. informal speech, the structure of verbs like gustar, and the cultural weight of the ñ and diéresis. Each topic helped learners not only understand grammar, but also connect with the language’s identity.
Finally, Short Stories in English and Spanish brought creativity to the forefront. From a mirror that wouldn’t let go to a star that wanted to dim, these poetic, surreal tales offered a moment of reflection—and a quiet challenge to see language as more than rules and words.
June offered a powerful mix of insight, curiosity, and connection. Whether you were deep in grammar, caught in a story, or reflecting on how we learn, it was a month well spent.
ENGLISH READINGS
All posts for more advanced English learners and everyone interested!
This collection explores key aspects of language learning from both cognitive and historical perspectives. It begins with interlanguage, the brain’s adaptive system for building a new linguistic framework, followed by an examination of phonological interference—how native language sounds impact pronunciation in a second language. The importance of rhythm and intonation is highlighted as essential for fluency and communication. A historical lens is applied in the discussion of war’s influence on English, showing how conflict has shaped vocabulary and spread. Finally, the debate between grammar-first vs. conversation-first approaches is unpacked, offering guidance on effective learning strategies.

CASTELLANO (Español)
Spanish language learners!
In learning Spanish, several unique features of the language stand out, offering insight into both grammar and culture. One key distinction is between formal and informal speech, where choosing tú or usted—and adjusting verb forms accordingly—can show respect or familiarity in conversation. Another essential concept is mastering verbs like gustar, which function differently than typical verbs, flipping the usual subject-object order and often puzzling learners at first. Beyond grammar, Spanish also boasts distinctive characters, like the iconic ñ, a letter with deep historical and cultural roots that sets the language apart. Equally intriguing is the diéresis (¨), which appears over the u in words like pingüino, altering pronunciation in very specific cases. Together, these elements highlight the richness and complexity of Spanish, making it both challenging and rewarding to learn.
