Slinger Francisco, the singer and songwriter known as the Mighty Sparrow, has died at 91. Born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad, Sparrow became one of the defining figures of calypso, combining Caribbean storytelling, humour, satire and social commentary across a career spanning more than six decades. His breakthrough came with “Jean and Dinah” in 1956, and his extensive body of songs helped carry Trinidad and Tobago's calypso tradition to international audiences. He received the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in 2014, the country's highest national honour.
