Ten NSW Writers, Illustrators and Playwrights Begin Stories Matter Fellowships
Ten writers, illustrators and playwrights in New South Wales began their inaugural Stories Matter NSW Literary Fellowships on 1 November 2026. Each recipient will receive A$50,000 and professional support to develop a substantial new creative work over twelve months.
The ten fellows were announced on 27 October by Writing NSW and Create NSW following a selection process involving more than 330 applicants. The A$500,000 programme supports four emerging practitioners, three at mid-career level and three established writers or artists.
Emerging recipients Sarah Carroll, Alisha Brown, Erica J. Brennan and Ellen O'Brien join mid-career fellows Dylin Hardcastle, Nisaluk Chantanakom and Jazz Money. The established group comprises Omar Sakr, Mick Elliott and Alana Valentine.
The selected projects cover plays, fiction, poetry and graphic storytelling. In addition to the funding, every fellow receives a consultation with an industry professional. Emerging recipients also receive ten hours of structured mentorship and a further A$1,000 for professional development.
The fellowships run until 31 October 2027, with a public showcase planned for the following November. The programme provides the ten fellows with time and resources to develop new books, theatre work and illustrated narratives.
