Penguin Random House Funds 50,000 Quick Reads Books for Probation Services
Penguin Random House is funding a special print run of 50,000 Quick Reads books for distribution to people supported by probation services in England and Wales. The initiative is being delivered with The Reading Agency as the programme marks its twentieth anniversary.
Quick Reads was established to make enjoyable, professionally written books more accessible to adults who are less confident about reading or who have fallen out of the habit. Its shorter titles are designed to offer complete stories without requiring the time associated with longer books.
The Reading Agency plans to distribute the new copies through probation services, extending the reach of the programme beyond its established library and bookshop channels. The project gives the participating readers access to published stories and a route back into recreational reading.
The initiative builds on two decades of work involving authors, publishers and reading organisations. By supplying books in a setting where readers may have fewer opportunities to choose them, the partners are seeking to make access to literature part of a broader programme of support.
The additional print run is a concrete anniversary project for Quick Reads. It puts thousands of copies into circulation with a focus on readers who may benefit from approachable books and opportunities to develop lasting reading habits.
