Poetry Foundation Awards $1.52 Million to 52 Literary Organisations
The Poetry Foundation announced $1.52 million in general operating grants on 28 October 2026, providing financial support to 52 nonprofit poetry organisations, small publishers, magazines and literary service groups. The recipients work across 23 states and United States territories.
The grants support a range of activity that helps poetry reach readers: magazines and presses publish new writing, community organisations organise readings and education, and literary service bodies offer professional development and support for poets and translators. The funding is intended for general operations rather than the publication of one particular anthology or book.
Among the recipients are the Academy of American Poets, Alice James Books, the American Literary Translators Association, Nightboat Books, Words Without Borders and the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses. Individual amounts vary; the Foundation's published list includes awards ranging from $10,000 to $60,000.
The organisation said that the new round takes its total grantmaking for 2026 above $3.4 million when other programmes are included. Poetry Foundation president and chief executive Michelle T. Boone emphasised the importance of sustaining literary organisations as operating costs rise.
By supporting the organisations behind journals, publishing programmes, translations and public readings, the grants reach beyond individual poets to the literary networks that help their work find audiences.
