Royal Society Selects Six Books for 2026 Young People's Book Prize
The Royal Society has announced six books on the shortlist for its 2026 Young People's Book Prize, which recognises science writing for readers under fourteen. The selection was revealed on 29 October, with children across the United Kingdom set to take part in choosing the winner.
The shortlisted titles include Choose Your Own Evolution by Jules Howard, illustrated by Gordy Wright, and Cosmo Park by Madeleine Finlay, illustrated by Tom Dearie. One invites readers to explore the history of life through choices, while the other presents an illustrated journey through space.
Elements of the Day by Samantha Lewis, illustrated by Hao Hao, introduces chemistry through familiar experiences. Moving to Mars, by Eduard Altarriba and a team of scientific collaborators, examines the challenges of travelling to and living on another planet.
The final two books are The Great Pollination Investigation by Deborah Hocking and The Wizard's Guide to Magical Experiments by AJ Wood, illustrated by Jo Rioux. Together, the six titles span biology, astronomy, chemistry, experimentation and the natural world.
The shortlist was chosen by an adult judging panel chaired by physicist Cristina Lazzeroni. Copies will now be sent to schools and reading groups, where young people will vote for their favourite. The winner is scheduled to be announced in June 2027.
