New Zealand Booksellers Protest Delays to Sarah J. Maas Release
More than forty independent bookshops in Aotearoa New Zealand have signed an open letter to Bloomsbury Australia and Penguin Random House Distribution following delays in receiving copies of Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Splintered Harmony. The novel was released internationally on 27 October 2026.
Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand said that many independent shops had not received their ordered stock by publication day, despite arranging pre-orders, staff cover and events around the launch. The association reported that larger retailers and online sellers were able to supply the novel when the embargo ended.
The letter describes the commercial costs of a missed launch, including cancelled pre-orders, unsuccessful customer visits and extra expenses for promotional activities. It argues that smaller bookshops face particular difficulties when stock arrives later than at major retail chains.
Representatives of the independent book trade are asking for more reliable delivery windows, clearer warnings of shipment delays and fairer treatment when books are allocated among retailers. They have invited Bloomsbury representatives to discuss distribution arrangements before the end of November.
The complaint concerns the supply of one highly anticipated fantasy novel, but the booksellers have framed it as part of a wider problem in their trade. The discussion highlights the importance of distribution timing for independent shops that rely on major releases to attract readers and fulfil advance orders.
