Jeff Kinney’s New Wimpy Kid Book Tops the UK Bestseller Chart
Jeff Kinney has returned to the top of the Official UK Top 50 with Fight or Flight, the twenty-first title in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Industry publication The Bookseller reported the result on 27 October, drawing on NielsenIQ BookScan’s Total Consumer Market figures.
The book sold 43,071 copies in its first official week on sale, enough to lead the national ranking. The result gives Kinney his nineteenth number-one appearance on the UK chart. It is a substantial opening, although the reported total is below both his own historical weekly peak and the corresponding launch-week figure for the previous volume.
The same chart reflects continued demand for familiar children’s characters and long-running reading series. Other prominent books in the top five include titles associated with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Jamie Smart and Katie Kirby, alongside a new Jack Reacher novel for adult readers. Bookselling data from one national market cannot establish how widely a title is being read in other countries, or whether readers are purchasing other formats.
The figures offer a clear snapshot of the British book market at the end of October. They demonstrate the commercial endurance of Kinney’s illustrated fiction without suggesting that every new instalment must outperform the last. The ranking concerns UK sales for the reported week, not worldwide sales or cumulative totals.
