Olivia De Zilva Wins the 2026 Readings New Australian Fiction Prize
Australian writer Olivia De Zilva has won the 2026 Readings New Australian Fiction Prize for Plastic Budgie, published by Pink Shorts Press. The result was announced on 27 October at La Mama Theatre in Carlton, Melbourne, following a shortlist of six books by emerging Australian authors.
De Zilva, who is from Adelaide, receives a prize of A$5,000. The award also gives the winning work additional attention through Readings bookshops and their online store. Established in 2014, the prize is intended to introduce readers to distinctive new voices rather than focus exclusively on writers with long-established careers.
Plastic Budgie is a compact coming-of-age novel, described by Readings as an autobiographically inflected work combining humour with questions of family, memory and belonging. The story draws on the experience of growing up in Adelaide as the child of Asian immigrants. Its short length, fewer than 150 pages, did not prevent the judges from finding considerable depth beneath the comic surface.
The shortlist also included Arborescence by Rhett Davis, Mantle by Romy Ash and Henry Goes Bush by Wayne Marshall, among other titles. The award announcement is a new development following the earlier release of that shortlist, not a second report of the same event.
De Zilva has also written a young adult novella, Eggshell, and a poetry collection, Sick Note. The prize brings her latest book to wider notice and offers readers another starting point for exploring contemporary Australian fiction.
