Previously Unpublished Harry Houdini Manuscript Appears in The Strand
The Strand Magazine has published a previously unpublished manuscript by Harry Houdini, bringing an unfamiliar part of the escapologist's writing into print a century after his death. The piece, An Interesting Scrapbook, appears in the magazine's seventy-ninth issue.
Rather than explaining his famous escapes, Houdini's work examines the performers who came before him. Drawing on old theatrical playbills and historical accounts, he records the acts and reputations of magicians whose names have largely faded from public memory.
The manuscript was preserved among Houdini's papers at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Its publication reveals how closely he studied the history of magic and the careers of performers who preceded him.
Strand editor Andrew Gulli has described the piece as a record of earlier stage magic and the people who helped develop it. The magazine has previously published rediscovered writing by established literary figures, making the Houdini material part of its wider archival programme.
The publication coincides with the centenary of Houdini's death in 1926. His account preserves details of earlier magicians and their performances, a subject to which he devoted attention beyond his own stage career.
