UWA Publishing Acquires Megan Cheong’s Novella Exchange
University of Western Australia Publishing has acquired Australian and New Zealand rights to Exchange, a literary novella by Megan Cheong. Publishing manager Kate Pickard secured the work through Bella Suckling of Annabel Barker Agency, extending the publisher’s list of contemporary fiction.
The story follows Megan after she arrives in Berlin, where unfamiliar language becomes part of the challenge of settling into a new city. Her attempts to communicate, form connections and pursue creative work shape a narrative about distance from home and the possibilities of a changed environment.
Exchange uses the compact form of the novella to examine the connection between language and belonging. The work’s setting is not simply a backdrop: the limits of the central character’s fluency complicate ordinary encounters and leave room for uncertainty about how others understand her. Questions about home, travel and the desire to create sit alongside those practical difficulties.
The agreement covers the Australian and New Zealand markets. The acquisition places a compact literary work on the publisher’s forthcoming list and brings a narrative about communication and displacement into the Australian and New Zealand markets.
