Footpath Library Receives A$20,000 to Sustain Australian Mobile Services
Australia’s Footpath Library has received an A$20,000 grant to replenish resources used by its mobile library services for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. The funding comes through the CommBank Staff Foundation’s 2026 Community Grants programme, which is supporting 180 organisations across the country.
The Footpath Library operates more than 35 mobile services in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Volunteers bring free books and reading glasses to people who may have limited access to conventional library services. Activities for children are part of the programme, as are regular opportunities for conversation and connection at the outreach locations.
Founder and managing director Sarah Garnett said the services offer practical assistance as well as a familiar place where visitors can meet others. The new grant is intended to help keep the mobile libraries stocked with materials for readers of different ages and interests. The announcement does not describe a confirmed expansion to new cities or an increase in the number of services.
The 2026 Community Grants programme is distributing A$3.6 million in total, with each of the 180 recipient organisations awarded A$20,000. It is run through a workplace-giving foundation supported by Commonwealth Bank employees and matching contributions from the bank. The Footpath Library’s award illustrates how a modest book collection can also serve as a regular meeting point, linking reading access with practical community outreach.
