MidnightSun Acquires Nicky Zhang’s Austen-Inspired Novel
Australian publisher MidnightSun has acquired world rights to Rice Sister, Noodle Sister, a novel by Nicky Zhang. The forthcoming book revisits Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility by moving its relationship between contrasting sisters into a contemporary Chinese-New Zealand family.
The story centres on two women whose personalities and expectations have led them to approach family obligations differently. For Ling, the older sister, trying to meet the standards expected of a dutiful daughter has shaped much of her adult life. The second sister offers another perspective on how affection, independence and loyalty can pull relatives in different directions.
Zhang’s novel joins a long tradition of retelling Austen’s stories in settings far removed from nineteenth-century England. Here, the connection comes from the tension between contrasting temperaments and the ties that keep a family together. The new social setting allows familiar questions of duty and individual desire to be explored through contemporary characters.
The acquisition gives MidnightSun global publishing rights. Zhang’s forthcoming novel will draw on the English literary tradition while telling its own story about sisters in a New Zealand family. The novel is among the publisher’s forthcoming acquisitions.
