Amy McQuire Awarded 2027 Peter Blazey Fellowship for Life-Writing Project
Australian journalist and author Amy McQuire has won the 2027 Peter Blazey Fellowship for State of Disappearance, an unfinished nonfiction manuscript examining the cases of five missing First Nations women and the experiences of their families. The A$20,000 award was announced at the Queenscliffe Literary Festival on 17 October.
The fellowship supports writers developing substantial works of biography, autobiography or life writing. McQuire’s project approaches its subject through individual lives and family accounts, placing a sustained piece of narrative nonfiction at the centre of the award rather than a completed book ready for publication.
McQuire has written extensively as a journalist and commentator. Her book Black Witness, published by the University of Queensland Press, has received several Australian literary honours, including a Victorian Premier’s Literary Award and a Queensland Literary Award. Her work has also extended into audio journalism and podcasting.
The Peter Blazey Fellowship commemorates the Australian journalist and author Peter Blazey, who died in 1997. Established through his family and partner, it is awarded annually to help an author advance a nonfiction manuscript. Earlier recipients have included writers working across personal history, biography and memoir.
The 2027 designation refers to the fellowship year; McQuire’s selection was announced in October 2026. State of Disappearance remains a work in progress, and no publication date has been announced for the finished manuscript.
