2027 Astrid Lindgren Award Nominees Include Australian Authors and Magabala Books
The 2027 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award has announced a list of 277 nominated authors, illustrators, storytellers and reading promoters from 80 countries and regions. Eighty-five candidates are new to the international list, which was formally released on 14 October.
Australian candidates highlighted in reporting on 19 October include Alison Lester, nominated as both author and illustrator; writers Susanne Gervay and Ursula Dubosarsky; and Magabala Books, nominated for its work promoting reading. The nominees represent different ways of bringing literature to children and young people, from making books to expanding access to them.
Established by the Swedish government in 2002, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award recognises significant contributions to children’s and young adult literature. The prize, administered by the Swedish Arts Council, carries a value of five million Swedish kronor. The 2026 laureate was Canadian illustrator and picture-book creator Jon Klassen.
The organisers plan to announce the 2027 recipient on 6 April. These names are candidates for the award, not a shortlist of finalists or a list of winners, and the Australian selection is only part of the international nominations.
