Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet Tops Australia’s Top 100 Books Poll
Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet has been voted the number-one title in ABC Radio National’s Top 100 Australian Books, the result of a national readers’ countdown completed on Sunday, 18 October. The poll attracted more than 280,000 votes and covered Australian books across fiction and other forms of writing.
Published in 1991, Cloudstreet follows two families sharing a large house in Perth. The novel has remained in print for decades and has been adapted for radio, television, theatre and opera. Winton, speaking during the countdown, said he was honoured and somewhat bewildered by the book’s enduring response from readers.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak placed second, followed by Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton. Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites and A Fortunate Life by A. B. Facey completed the top five. The selection spans modern bestsellers and longstanding Australian favourites.
Winton appeared four times in the full hundred: alongside Cloudstreet, readers chose Breath at number 33, Dirt Music at 41 and Juice at 88. The countdown’s final result was announced on 18 October; subsequent reporting and interviews appeared on 19 October. This is a public readers’ poll, not a juried literary prize.
