The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance says executive director Linda-Marie Barrett will step down at the end of 2026. Barrett joined the regional booksellers’ organisation in 2017 and became its executive director in 2020. The board is preparing a search for her successor as the association continues to support independent bookstores across the southeastern United States.
Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Announces Year-End Director Departure
The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance has announced that executive director Linda-Marie Barrett will leave her position at the end of December 2026. The organisation issued its statement on 13 October, providing several months for a leadership transition.
Barrett joined the association as assistant executive director in 2017 and took the top role in 2020. During her tenure, the group expanded its membership and its work on professional programmes for independent bookshops in the southeastern United States. Publishers Weekly reports that membership reached 385 stores, roughly double its 2020 level.
The association also developed a partnership with the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association to produce New Voices New Rooms, initially online and later as an in-person trade gathering. It updated its identity and website in 2025 as part of an organisational renewal.
Barrett said she plans to spend more time on writing projects and family life. The SIBA board is forming a committee to find its next executive director; the organisation has not yet announced a successor. This is a planned leadership departure, not a closure or merger. The change matters to the regional network of booksellers that depends on the association for events, contacts and professional support.
