Australia’s Love Your Bookshop Day on 10 October drew strong interest, according to the Australian Booksellers Association. The association reported that some participating shops experienced exceptionally high foot traffic and sales. A delayed promotional Personal Penguin figurine was replaced at participating stores by a book-nook card entitling qualifying customers to collect the figurine later.
Australian Booksellers Report Strong Love Your Bookshop Day Turnout
Independent and local bookshops across Australia marked Love Your Bookshop Day on 10 October 2026, with the Australian Booksellers Association reporting encouraging participation and unusually strong trading at some stores. The annual celebration invites readers to visit bookshops, meet booksellers and discover titles through personal recommendations.
The 2026 theme was Ask a bookseller. Shake up your shelf. Shops arranged activities, promotions and reader events, drawing attention to the role of booksellers in introducing customers to unfamiliar authors and subjects.
One promotion required a last-minute adjustment. Penguin's planned limited-edition Personal Penguin figurines did not arrive in time. At participating stores, customers purchasing two eligible Penguin books could instead obtain a Personal Penguin Book Nook Card, providing a way to collect the figurine after its delayed arrival.
The association described the day as highly successful, and its chief executive reported that some shops had recorded their strongest foot traffic and sales. Those comments are reports from participating businesses, not a comprehensive national sales measure. The occasion offered a reminder that in-person discovery remains a significant part of book culture alongside online shopping and digital recommendations.
