The agreement extends the publisher's involvement in the previously self-published historical-fiction series, planned to comprise twenty-five books. The ninth volume is scheduled for simultaneous publication by Bloomsbury, Viking and HarperCollins Canada on February 23, 2027.
Bloomsbury Acquires Ninth Volume of Beth Brower's Emma M. Lion Series
Bloomsbury has acquired rights to the ninth volume of Beth Brower's The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, extending its commitment to the previously self-published historical-fiction series.
Alexis Kirschbaum, head of Bloomsbury Trade, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, through literary agent Georgina Capel. The publisher had previously secured the first eight volumes ahead of the 2026 London Book Fair.
Brower began publishing the series independently in 2019 through Rhysdon Press. Presented as fictional journals, the books follow Emma M. Lion through the everyday complications, relationships and eccentric characters of Victorian London. The author plans to write twenty-five volumes.
The series has attracted substantial international interest. Viking acquired US publishing rights, while translation agreements have been concluded for twelve languages, including French, German and Italian. Penguin Random House reported that the independently published books had sold more than one million print and digital copies in the United States.
Bloomsbury released the first two volumes earlier in 2026, followed by volumes three and four on October 8. The fifth through eighth volumes are scheduled for November.
The newly acquired ninth volume is planned for simultaneous publication by Bloomsbury, Viking and HarperCollins Canada on February 23, 2027.
The agreement illustrates how an established independent readership can support larger publishing partnerships and coordinated international releases.
