Bloomsbury has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to Sarah Lee Walker's debut novel The Alchemy of Salt following a six-way, six-figure auction. Separate North American rights were acquired by Harper, while translation deals have been concluded in 18 languages ahead of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The novel, a love story with a central mystery set in a coastal community, is scheduled for publication in spring 2028. The agreements mark a significant international rights launch for the Canadian author's first novel.
Bloomsbury Wins Six-Figure Auction for Sarah Lee Walker's Debut Novel
Bloomsbury has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to Sarah Lee Walker's debut novel The Alchemy of Salt, following a competitive six-way auction that reached a six-figure sum.
The acquisition was announced on October 9, ahead of the Frankfurt Book Fair. Darcy Nicholson, publishing director at Bloomsbury General, secured the rights through literary agent Hellie Ogden at WME.
North American rights were sold separately at auction by WME's Alyssa Reuben to Sarah Stein at Harper US and Jennifer Lambert at Harper Canada.
The novel has also attracted considerable international interest. WME's international rights agent Alex Levenberg has concluded agreements covering 18 languages, including sales to dtv in Germany, Penguin Random House for Spanish-language publication and Intrínseca in Brazil. Additional agreements include Mondadori in Italy, Agave in Hungary and Presses de la Cité in France.
Scheduled for publication in spring 2028, The Alchemy of Salt follows a young mother returning to a seaside community twelve years after a tragedy. There, she reconnects with someone from her past and confronts a secret central to the novel's romantic and mysterious storyline.
Walker, who is based in Ontario, will make her publishing debut with an unusually broad international rights programme already in place. The agreements demonstrate strong publisher interest before the novel's release, although its commercial performance remains to be seen.
