The Empire State Center for the Book has named N. K. Jemisin, Lawrence Block and Kay Thompson as the three writers selected for induction into the 2026 New York State Writers Hall of Fame. Their induction ceremony is scheduled for November 17 at the Lotos Club in New York City.
N. K. Jemisin has become one of contemporary speculative fiction's most influential voices. Her Broken Earth trilogy earned three consecutive Hugo Awards for Best Novel, an unprecedented achievement for a single trilogy. Her novels explore questions of power, identity, social structures and survival through richly imagined fictional worlds.
Lawrence Block has spent decades shaping American crime fiction. His best-known characters include Matthew Scudder, an alcoholic private investigator navigating New York's criminal underworld, and Bernie Rhodenbarr, a burglar with an unlikely talent for solving mysteries. His extensive bibliography has established him as a major figure in modern mystery writing.
Kay Thompson, who died in 1998, will be inducted posthumously. A writer, performer and entertainer, she created Eloise, the mischievous young heroine of the 1955 children's book illustrated by Hilary Knight. The character became a lasting presence in American children's literature.
Established in 2010, the New York State Writers Hall of Fame recognises writers associated with the state's literary history. The programme is administered by the Empire State Center for the Book in conjunction with the New York State Writers Institute.
