Annie's Foundation, an Iowa-based nonprofit, has used public-records requests to investigate the removal of books from school libraries following the introduction of state restrictions in 2023. According to an October 2 report by Publishers Weekly, responses gathered by the organisation document more than 4,800 book removals involving approximately 1,500 distinct ISBNs.
The foundation is seeking information about whether withdrawn books have been stored, donated, sold or discarded. Its investigation has also revealed gaps in school districts' recordkeeping, making it difficult to establish what happened to some materials. The reported figures remain incomplete and have not been independently audited.
Iowa Foundation Tracks More Than 4,800 School Book Removals
An Iowa nonprofit is using public-records requests to reconstruct what happened to books removed from public school libraries following the introduction of state restrictions in 2023. Publishers Weekly reported on October 2 that Annie's Foundation has contacted almost all of Iowa's roughly 330 school districts, seeking records of withdrawn titles and their subsequent handling.
The organisation says responses received so far document more than 4,800 book removals involving approximately 1,500 distinct ISBNs. These figures represent the foundation's findings rather than a complete, independently audited statewide count. In July, it had reported 4,810 removal instances based on responses from more than 250 districts.
The requests seek to establish whether withdrawn books remain in storage or have been donated, sold, discarded or otherwise removed from school collections. Foundation president Sara Hayden Parris told Publishers Weekly that some districts had been unable to provide complete records of what became of the materials.
The investigation follows Iowa's Senate File 496, enacted in 2023, which includes restrictions concerning school-library books containing descriptions or depictions of sexual acts. The law's implementation has faced continuing litigation, with changes to the scope of its enforcement.
The foundation hopes to establish a clearer account of which books were removed and where they went. Its investigation raises a broader administrative question about the documentation and management of public school library collections.
