Penguin Random House Australia Acquires Peter Carey Memoir An Unstable Element
Penguin Random House Australia has acquired Australia and New Zealand rights to An Unstable Element, a forthcoming memoir by Australian novelist Peter Carey. The agreement was negotiated with Peter Straus at RCW Literary Agency.
The memoir follows Carey’s life from his childhood above the spare-parts department of his family’s small-town car dealership through the experiences that shaped his literary career. RCW describes a journey across different places and social worlds, marked by both setbacks and success, and driven by his ambition to create something original.
Carey won the Booker Prize for Oscar and Lucinda in 1988 and again for True History of the Kelly Gang in 2001. His other books include Bliss, Illywhacker, Jack Maggs and A Long Way from Home. He moved to New York in 1990 and subsequently taught at several American universities.
The rights agreement covers Australia and New Zealand, while RCW lists Faber as the memoir’s UK publisher. An Unstable Element is expected to appear in 2027, offering readers an autobiographical account of the life behind Carey’s fiction.
