Patrick deWitt Discusses the Making of Dodge City
Canadian novelist Patrick deWitt discusses Dodge City, his sixth novel and one of the 14 books selected for the 2026 Giller Prize longlist, in a Giller Spotlight exploring some of the influences surrounding the book.
Published in Canada by House of Anansi Press, Dodge City is set in 1967 and follows Lee Clarke, a 23-year-old UCLA student whose expulsion after a fistfight costs him his military draft deferment. Faced with being called to serve in the Vietnam War, Lee decides to leave California and make his way toward Canada.
He takes a job delivering a car across the United States, turning his escape into a cross-country journey that also gives him an opportunity to visit members of his scattered family. The resulting road novel combines deWitt's characteristic humour with questions of family, separation, war and a country undergoing profound change.
In the Giller Spotlight, deWitt says there was no single book behind Dodge City, although he points to Gilbert Sorrentino's The Sky Changes and the road novels of Charles Portis among its literary influences. Films including Five Easy Pieces, Two-Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point, The Last Detail and Badlands also formed part of the background to the novel.
Born in British Columbia and now living in Portland, Oregon, deWitt has previously been recognised by both Canadian and international literary prizes. The Sisters Brothers was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and Giller Prize, while French Exit was also a Giller finalist.
With Dodge City, deWitt returns to the Giller field with a road novel that uses one young man's attempt to escape the draft as the beginning of a broader journey through family and late-1960s America.
