Libro.fm and Silent Book Club are partnering with more than 400 independent bookshops, libraries and reading groups for Banned Books Read-Ins during Banned Books Week, October 4–10. Events in the United States and other countries will combine communal reading with activities organised around opposition to book restrictions, while in-person participants can receive one of two free audiobooks.
Libro.fm and Silent Book Club Launch Global Banned Books Read-Ins
Libro.fm and Silent Book Club are joining independent bookshops, libraries and reading groups around the world for a series of Banned Books Read-Ins running October 4–10, during Banned Books Week.
More than 400 participating locations are involved in the programme, which is returning for a second year. Events are taking place primarily across the United States but also include participating locations in other countries, creating an international network of local gatherings.
The format varies by location. Alongside periods of communal or silent reading, organisers suggest activities including banned-book swaps, audiobook walks and letter or postcard writing, with individual bookshops, libraries and reading groups determining their own programmes.
In-person participants can also receive a free audiobook copy of either How to Defend Books and Why: Book Bans and How We Fight Them by Danny Caine or Banned Together: Our Fight for Readers' Rights, the young-adult anthology edited by Ashley Hope Pérez.
Libro.fm and Silent Book Club explicitly present the Read-Ins as a response to book challenges and restrictions on reading materials. Silent Book Club is also running a wider October programme highlighting challenged books and directing readers towards organisations and resources concerned with access to books.
The Read-Ins continue through October 10, spreading the programme across the full 2026 Banned Books Week rather than concentrating it in a single central event.
